Sara B. Deacon, M.D.

Dr. Sara Deacon specializes in the treatment of corneal and external diseases and routinely performs refractive surgery. Her special interests include the management of cataracts, keratoconus, dry eye disease, neurotrophic keratopathy and the treatment and prevention of corneal ulcers. Dr. Deacon also has extensive experience in comprehensive ophthalmology.

Dr. Deacon received her undergraduate degree at the University of Florida and pursued a year of research at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary before obtaining her medical degree at the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine in Boca Raton. While in medical school, Dr. Deacon conducted advanced research in lens development and cataract formation and was inducted into the Golden Key International Honour Society. 

Dr. Deacon then went on to complete her internship in internal medicine at the University of New Mexico, where she was voted intern of the year, and her ophthalmology residency at New York Medical College. Following her residency, Dr. Deacon concluded her formal training with a fellowship in cornea, external disease and refractive surgery at West Virginia University. 

Prior to joining Carolina Ophthalmology, Dr. Deacon served as a local Western North Carolina cornea specialist and comprehensive ophthalmologist for over three years. She is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a current member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Deacon’s hobbies include spending time with her husband, two young sons, labradoodle and cat. She enjoys baking, gardening and tending the pollinator habitat she created near her home. She also loves to travel and learn about new cultures and has explored over 47 states, seven countries and 15 national parks.
