Dr. Choe specializes in the removal of both benign and malignant tumors from around the eyes. In the case of a malignant lesion (such as a basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and/or melanoma), she may work in conjunction with a Mohs surgeon to achieve the optimal result. A Mohs surgeon is a dermatologist who specializes in the detection and removal of skin cancer. Working with a Mohs surgeon ensures that the malignancy is completely removed while also minimizing the amount of normal tissue that is removed. This usually results in a smaller area that needs to be reconstructed. Dr. Choe specializes in lid reconstruction and will repair defects from cancers or trauma using flaps and/or grafts. Flaps are tissues that are rotated or moved into a new position. Grafts are tissues that are excised from one location and transferred to a totally new location. While the primary goal of reconstruction is to maintain the function of the eye and the eyelids, Dr. Choe also is seeking to achieve the best possible aesthetic outcome as well.
